Level 1 Course

Course Overview

Studying the Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language presents a different way of communicating. You will learn many new skills, including a practical approach to the grammar of British Sign Language, signs relating to everyday life, and how to fingerspell.

The topics covered include: Greeting people and exchanging information, numbers, weather and transport, describing people, animals and objects, hobbies, interests and activities, directions and refreshments. The Level 1 qualification is split into three units:

BSL101 – Introduction to BSL

You will start with basic everyday signs, fingerspelling and simple conversation. The assessment is a short conversation between you and your teacher. Your teacher will assess you.

BSL102 – Conversational BSL

As your confidence grows, so will your vocabulary in a range of everyday topics. The assessment is a conversation between you and your teacher. Signature will assess you from a video recording.

BSL103 – Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life

You will gain more knowledge of BSL grammar and sentence structure. This unit’s assessment is a conversation between you and your teacher. Signature will assess you from a video recording.
